Tenure and Promotions
Appointments to tenure are made in the grades of Professor and Associate Professor following the process of peer review.
An appointment to tenure is made when an individual of widely recognized excellence is found to fill a scholarly need that is demonstrably vital to a discipline central to the University purposes. Tenure can be proposed for existing faculty on the tenure track or it can be offered to a new recruit.
Tenure nominations require Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Committee on Appointments and Promotions (CUIMC COAP) review and approval by the Tenure Review Advisory Committee (TRAC).
New appointments and promotions of non-tenured faculty to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, as well as to the research titles of Research Scientist or Senior Research Scientist in VP&S require the review and approval of the Faculty of Medicine COAP.
