Expedited Review

New officers of instruction who are to be appointed at advanced rank (associate professor or full professor) can undergo an expedited review by the Faculty of Medicine Committee on Appointments and Promotions (COAP).

Prior to making a formal offer of employment, the academic department submits the documents listed below and the Chair and/or designee attend(s) a COAP meeting and present(s) to a subcommittee.

  • Department Chair's written request for the expedited review
  • Candidate’s CV

A small committee, approved by the dean, will be appointed to evaluate the candidate’s qualifications for the proposed rank. This committee may consist of either a five-member subcommittee from the FOM COAP (including both co-chairs and three additional members) or other senior faculty members designated by the dean. The committee members will have the necessary expertise to assess the candidate’s qualifications.

Candidates will be evaluated by the most stringent criteria for the requested rank.

When the committee approves the proposed advanced rank, a formal offer of employment can be made to the recruit at the proposed rank, and it should state that the appointment is contingent on the full COAP review that is required within time limits and processes consistent with either the tenure track or the “at CUMC” track.

Officers appointed by the expedited review process can be appointed to the non-tenure “at CUMC” track or to the “ tenure” track.

  • If appointment is to the “at CUMC” track, the full COAP review must take place within 6-9 months.
  •  If the officer is appointed to the tenure track, the department will have 3 years for those without clinical duties or 5 years for those with at least 20% clinical effort to prepare and present the candidate’s dossier for tenure.
