WHAT: A luncheon announcing the establishment, at Columbia University, of the first Lyme disease research center in the United States. The event will also honor Columbia’s two partners in this project, the Lyme Disease Association and the Greenwich Lyme Disease Task Force, for underwriting the center with a $650,000 endowed gift.
WHY: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Americans infected with Lyme disease has reached record proportions. The agency reported 17,730 cases in 2000, an increase of 8 percent from 1999 and well above the yearly average of 12,745 cases reported since 1991. Most cases are concentrated in or near the New York metropolitan area—with high incidence in the northeastern and mid-Atlantic states.
