Columbia University Holds “Topping Out” Ceremony for Irving Cancer Research Center Celebration Marks Structural Completion of 3rd Building in Audubon Science and Technology Park WHAT: A traditional “Topping Out” ceremony will mark the completion of the first major phase of construction for the new Irving Cancer Research Center, the third building in the Columbia University Audubon Science and Technology Park. The 13-story, approximately 300,000-square-foot facility is named for New York City philanthropist and food distribution executive Herbert Irving. The building is designed by Davis Brody Bond and features nine floors of research space, underground parking, and clinical facilities. A comprehensive breast cancer screening facility and research laboratories will be located in the new building, funded by a $10 million gift from Avon Products Foundation to Columbia University and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. Occupancy of the building will begin in the spring of 2003. WHY: The creation of the Irving Cancer Research Center, a state-of-the-art building bringing basic scientists and clinicians working on cancer, genetics and cell biology together in one site, will encourage collaborative efforts, building on Columbia’s important contributions in medical research and treatment. ### |
