212-305-4966 ***MEDIA ALERT*** COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS & SURGEONS HOLDS ANNUAL WHITE COAT CEREMONY FOR THE INCOMING CLASS WHAT: Established in 1993 at Columbia, the White Coat Ceremony is an annual event in which incoming medical students at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons (P&S) are ceremonially “cloaked” with their white laboratory coats and recite the Hippocratic Oath for the first time. (The ceremony is sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to fostering humanism in medicine.) WHY: Medical students commonly take the Hippocratic Oath upon completion of their education. The College of Physicians & Surgeons, however, feels strongly that students commit to the tenets of the Hippocratic Oath from the very beginning of their medical training. By having students pledge to uphold the Hippocratic Oath at the White Coat Ceremony, P&S seeks to encourage professionalism, promote clinical excellence, and instill a sense of responsibility for compassionate care in its first-year students. WHEN: Friday, August 24, 2001 1:00 p.m. WHERE: Alumni Auditorium Black Building Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons 650 West 168th Street (between Broadway and Fort Washington) ***Students and deans will be available for interviews and photo opportunities*** # # # |
