A Transition in Pediatrics Leadership

Dear Colleagues,

We write to share that Jordan Orange, MD, PhD, the Reuben S. Carpentier Professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, has informed us that he will be leaving Columbia for a new role as pediatrician-in-chief of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Jordan joined Columbia in 2018 and has made an enduring impact on the Department of Pediatrics. Under his leadership, the department received consistent NIH funding, reaching its highest level in 2024. He recruited and appointed nine new division directors and oversaw the hiring of nearly 200 faculty members, invigorating the outstanding care, research, and education capacities of the department. Devoted to advancing children’s health, Jordan also formed a trans-departmental children’s council to coordinate all VP&S departments around a children’s health mission. We thank Jordan for his leadership and for the lasting contributions he has made to pediatrics at Columbia and NYP.

During the transition, Marina Catallozzi, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and population and family health and executive vice chair and vice chair for education in the Department of Pediatrics, will serve as interim chair of the Department of Pediatrics. We are delighted that she will be stepping into this role and advancing the mission of NewYork-Presbyterian Children’s Hospital of New York, of which we are fully supportive and committed.

We will conduct a national search to find a chair who will build on the department’s success and continue its long legacy of making a difference in the lives of children.

Please join us in wishing Jordan the best of luck in his next endeavor.

Sincerely,

James McKiernan, MD
