Association of American Physicians Honors Four Columbia Physician-Scientists
The Association of American Physicians has elected four VP&S faculty members to its membership: Adam Bass, MD; Catherine Schevon, MD, PhD; Robert Schwabe, MD, PhD; and Olajide Williams, MD. Read more.
Students Hear from Roy Vagelos, First-Generation College Student
Members of the VP&S Class of 2025 met last week with Roy Vagelos, 1954 graduate of VP&S, who discussed his upbringing in New Jersey and his career in medicine and business. VP&S Dean Katrina Armstrong, MD, the first in her family to become a doctor, gave remarks to welcome the students and thanked Dr. Vagelos for his transformative support of the medical school. Second Annual Dr. Lorna M. Breen Lecture to Feature Award-Winning Poet
The lecture to honor the memory of Lorna M. Breen will be delivered April 28 at 4 p.m. by Elizabeth Alexander, a nationally recognized poet and president of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The CUIMC community is invited to attend in person in Alumni Auditorium in the William Black Medical Research Building or online via Zoom. Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed to help with commencement week at CUIMC. Volunteers can sign up for four-hour shifts on one of three days of ceremonies, May 17-19. Volunteer roles include welcoming and directing guests, graduates, and faculty; escorting guests with special needs; providing general facility information; and distributing programs. Volunteers will attend a training lunch on Monday, May 16. If you are interested in participating and have permission from your supervisor, fill out an event host survey by April 22.
CUIMC and NYP Support First Health and Wellness Series for the Local School Community
CUIMC and NYP have partnered to provide resources and support the Office of the Superintendent of Community School District 6 to launch a health and wellness series for the school community. Read more.

GRANTS
VAGELOS COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS
Iok In Christine Chio, PhD, Institute for Cancer Genetics, will receive $600,000 over three years from the Pershing Square Sohn Cancer Research Alliance for “Developing Redox Based Therapeutics for Pancreatic Cancer.”
Jennifer Small Saunders, MD, PhD, Medicine, will receive $768,864 over four years from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for “tRNA modification reprogramming in artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum: An epigenetic driver of resistance?”
Markus Siegelin, MD, Pathology & Cell Biology, will receive $2,025,000 over five years from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke for “HDAC inhibitors reverse the Warburg Effect and Elicit Metabolic Vulnerabilities in Model Systems of Glioblastoma.”
Chaolin Zhang, PhD, Systems Biology, will receive $2,066,788 over four years from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences for “Integrative analysis of tissue-specific alternative splicing regulation under adaptive selection.”
MAILMAN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Rupak Shivakoti, PhD, Epidemiology, will receive $3,547,289 over five years from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for “Trial of Human Milk Oligosaccharide-based synbiotics for HIV-exposed uninfected children.”
AWARDS AND HONORS
VAGELOS COLLEGE OF PHYSICIANS AND SURGEONS
The Office of Academic Affairs has named 15 VP&S faculty members as recipients of funding that supports early-career faculty who have family caregiving responsibilities. Read more.
Jonathan Amiel, MD, Psychiatry, was selected to receive the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s 2022 National Humanism in Medicine Medal for his contributions to the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Stanley Chang, MD, Ophthalmology, has been honored with the Gonin Medal, an international award given to an ophthalmologist every four years by the International Council of Ophthalmology. He presented a special lecture at a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on March 24 and will be formally presented with the medal during the World Ophthalmology Congress in September 2022. Dr. Chang also recently received Ophthalmology Innovation Source’s Lifetime Innovator Award for his work in the advancement of vitreoretinal surgery and the pioneering techniques used today.
Anne Moscona, MD, Microbiology & Immunology, has been elected president of the American Society for Virology, effective July 2022.

Stephen Ferrara, DNP, was named president-elect of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Heidi Hahn-Schroeder, DNP, RN, and Maribeth Massie, PhD, were selected for the 2022-2023 AACN’s Elevating Leaders in Academic Nursing Program.
Lusine Poghosyan, PhD, RN, and Jingjing Shang, PhD, RN, will be inducted into Sigma’s International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in July.
