New Leadership Elected for ColumbiaDoctors
George A. (Jack) Cioffi, MD, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at P&S and ophthalmologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, has been elected the next president of ColumbiaDoctors, Columbia’s multi-specialty faculty practice organization of more than 1,200 clinical providers from Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Cioffi succeeds Louis Bigliani, MD, who served as president of ColumbiaDoctors for three years. Dr. Bigliani, the Frank E. Stinchfield Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, is outgoing chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at P&S.
Dr. Cioffi, an internationally recognized glaucoma scientist and clinician, is the Edward S. Harkness Chair of Ophthalmology and the Jean and Richard Deems Professor of Ophthalmology. He joined Columbia in 2012.
Dr. Cioffi received his medical degree at the University of South Carolina. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Maryland and a fellowship in research and clinical glaucoma at Devers Eye Institute in Portland, Ore. More recently, he completed the inaugural Harvard Business School managing health care delivery program. Before joining Columbia, Dr. Cioffi was the Richard Chenoweth Chair of Ophthalmology at the Devers Eye Institute and chief medical officer and senior vice president at Legacy Health System in Portland.
Dr. Cioffi is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Glaucoma and current chair of the Basic and Clinical Science Course for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He also chairs the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Glaucoma Research Foundation in San Francisco.
Dr. Cioffi’s research has been supported continuously over the past 18 years by multiple grants from the National Eye Institute; several private foundation and industry grants also provide support for his studies. He has authored more than 200 articles and book chapters and edited a book for non-ophthalmologists, “The Devers Manual: Ophthalmology for the Healthcare Professional.” He has been included in Best Doctors in America every year since 2002 and has received awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Glaucoma Research Foundation.
He has mentored more than 30 clinical and postdoctoral fellows during his career. These clinicians and scientists are now at academic institutions and in practices around the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
John Chabot, MD, vice president of ColumbiaDoctors since 2011, was re-elected vice president. Dr. Chabot, the David V. Habif Professor of Surgery at P&S, is chief of the Division of GI/Endocrine Surgery, executive director of the Pancreas Center, and associate director of clinical affairs at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center.
