Information On Herbert Pardes
President and Chief Executive Officer, New York Presbyterian Hospital
Herbert Pardes, M.D., Columbia University's vice president for Health Sciences, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the College of Physicians & Surgeons, has been elected president and chief executive officer of New York Presbyterian Hospital. Until a permanent replacement is found, Thomas Q. Morris, M.D. will serve as acting dean for Clinical and Education Affairs and David I. Hirsh, M.D. will serve as acting dean for Basic Science.
Dr. Pardes is a national figure in psychiatry and academic medicine. He is a graduate analyst of New York Psychoanalytic Institute and also trained in a Doctor of Medical Science Program as a research fellow. Subsequent to his training, he was Associate Director of the Residency Training Program at Downstate Medical Center and went on to become University Hospital Director and then Chairman of the Department until 1975.
In 1975, he moved to Colorado as Chairman of the University of Colorado Medical Center. During his tenure there, Dr. Pardes was instrumental in building research programs and working closely with the general psychiatric community and the state to develop closer collaboration between academia and other psychiatric and mental health groups. In 1978, he was recruited as Director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) where he remained until 1984. While at NIMH, he strengthened the research program and emphasized the need to increase both reimbursement and research support for psychiatry. Dr. Pardes also helped to improve the public image of psychiatry and to ensure a broad-based inclusion of the psychological, sociological, and biological aspects of psychiatry.
In 1984, he was appointed jointly as Director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia, where he has worked to develop a broad clinical, educational, and research agenda. His achievements include a major new center for AIDS research, a substantial effort in genetics, and expanded programming for schizophrenia, child psychiatric disorders, and geriatric disorders. Dr. Pardes' extensive recruiting has made Columbia's research program one of the largest in the world. In 1989, he was appointed Vice President for Health Sciences at Columbia and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, College of Physicians & Surgeons, overseeing the four health sciences schools. In that capacity, he has overseen major changes in the education of physicians, enhanced clinical and basic science research, and assumed a national role as an advocate for education, health care reimbursement reform, and support of biomedical research.
From 1989 to 1990, Dr. Pardes served as President of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and Chairman of the APA's Council on Research from 1990 -1994. He has served as Chairman of the Council of Deans of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and as Chairman of the AAMC. He served two two-year terms as Chairman of the New York Association of Medical Schools (AMS) and was appointed by the Mayor of New York City to chair a special task force on biomedical research and biotechnology. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine.
Dr. Pardes has testified for Congress and congressional committees regularly and has served as consultant to the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Alcohol, Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA). Throughout the 1980's, he was pivotal in developing alliances and encouraging citizen's groups to become active advocates for improving treatment of mental illness. He is President of the Scientific Board of the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), a Charter Associate Member of the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association (NDMDA), and a regular advisor to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), the Anxiety Disorders Association of America, and the Mental Health Association.
Dr. Pardes is on the editorial boards of numerous medical and psychiatric journals and has written over one hundred articles and chapters on diverse topics in mental health. He has created, conducted and negotiated many international collaborations, working with governments in India, China, Egypt, Israel and the former Soviet Union. He has also represented NIMH and the APA on a regular basis at World Health Organization meetings.
Dr. Pardes has been the recipient of numerous awards for his aggressive advocacy on behalf of patients and their families.
